An automated GPS system transforms geographic challenges

Paper road maps are rapidly being replaced by automated GPS devices as a must-have tool for long-distance travelers. As GPS technology has been transformed from purely military use and made available to almost everyone, more and more vehicle navigators have been introduced.

There are basically two types of car GPS equipment, with the favorite variety being the larger and generally fixed (not portable). Some label this particular type of electronic guide the “true car” navigator, as it is more accurate and easier to use than its other counterpart. It has a properly sized screen that can be easily viewed even with arms outstretched. It also has a voice guidance feature that tells the driver where to turn or notifies him if a designated point of interest is already nearby.

The second type of car GPS generally covers the smallest and most portable ones. They also have the same functions and features as their larger counterparts. However, portable car global positioning system devices are not very user friendly. Its small screen makes it difficult for drivers to immediately consult it without having to stop and look at the details displayed on the LCD screen. While some may drive and look at it at the same time, studies have shown this could be dangerous.

Vehicle GPS devices can be an essential tool for those who frequently travel by land to new towns or cities. It might save them from making occasional stops to ask for directions. While the traditional roadmap design has certainly improved over the years, it cannot provide real-time alerts or updates like its electronic versions.

Car GPS units aren’t just for the topographic illiterate. Knowing the main roads and corridors is usually quite easy to memorize, however, traffic and road closures are impossible to predict. Since satellites regularly update GPS devices on road and weather conditions, drivers will be effectively informed about the roads to take to avoid heavy traffic.
