Ayurvedic remedies for erectile dysfunction

Definition of erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability of a man to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for his sexual needs or the needs of his partner. Erectile dysfunction is sometimes called “impotence.”

The term “erectile dysfunction” can mean the inability to achieve an erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or the ability to achieve only brief erections.

Ayurveda defines erectile dysfunction or ED as follows.

Sankalpapravano nityam priyaam vashyaamapi stresyam ||

na yaathi lingahaithilyaath kadaachidyaathi vaa yadi |

Shwaasaarthaha swinnagaatrshcha moghasankalpacheshtitaha ||

This means that even if a man has a strong desire to have a sexual act with a cooperative partner, he cannot perform the sexual act due to the looseness (absence of erection) of his phallus (penis). Even if he performs intercourse with his determined efforts, he fails to get erection and is affected by tiredness, perspiration and frustration of performing sex.

erection physiology

The two chambers of the penis (corpora cavernosa) that run through the organ are filled with spongy tissue. The corpora cavernosa are surrounded by a membrane, called the tunica albuginea. Spongy tissue contains smooth muscles, fibrous tissues, spaces, veins, and arteries. The urethra, which is the channel for urine and semen, runs along the bottom of the corpora cavernosa.

Due to sensory or mental stimulation, or both, an erection begins. Due to impulses from the brain and local nerves, the muscles of the corpora cavernosa relax and allow blood to flow and fill the spaces in the spongy tissue.

The flow of blood creates pressure in the corpora cavernosa, causing the penis to expand. The tunica albuginea helps trap blood in the chambers, thus maintaining an erection. When the penile muscles contract to stop the inflow of blood and open the outflow channels, the erection recedes.

In Ayurveda, the physiology of erection and ejaculation is described as follows

Vrishunow basthimedram cha naabhyuuru vankshnow gudam|

The “apaanavayu”, one of the five types of vayu, is found in the testicles, urinary bladder, phallus, navel, thighs, groin, anus and colon. Its functions are the ejaculation of semen, evacuation of urine and feces.

Shushruta explains the process of erection and ejaculation as when a man has desire (iccha) to have sexual intercourse, his response to touch increases (Vayu located in the skin causes the flow of signals from the skin to the brain, thus causing the sensation of touch ). This causes excitement or “harsha”. Excitation or Harsha intensifies the actions of vayu and at this highly active time vayu releases the teja or heat of pitta. Thus, tejas and vayu increase body temperature, heartbeat, and blood flow, which leads to erection.

Causes of erectile dysfunction

The erection requires a sequence of events. Erectile dysfunction can occur when any of the events is disturbed. Nerve impulses in the brain, spinal cord, around the penis, and the response in the muscles, fibrous tissues, veins, and arteries in and around the corpora cavernosa constitute this sequence of events. Injury to any of these parts that are part of this sequence (nerves, arteries, smooth muscles, fibrous tissue) can cause erectile dysfunction.

About 5% of men doctors see for erectile dysfunction have low testosterone levels. In many of these cases, low testosterone causes decreased sexual interest, not erectile dysfunction.

The entire male body responds to testosterone.

Even sushruta has enlightened about this response of the body to the element “Shukra”. He said “yatha payasi sarpistu goodashchekshow raso yatha shareereshu tatha shukram nrinaam vidyaadhbishagwara”. This means that the shukra (the element that helps in reproduction) is present throughout the body.

These causes are mentioned as abhighata (trauma), shastradantanakhakshataha (weapon, tooth and nail injury) in ayurveda.

Other reasons: Obesity, riding a bike for a long time, a history of sexual abuse, and old age also cause erectile dysfunction.
