Discover 4 types of massively multiplayer online games

The landscape of computer games has changed dramatically with the popularity of online games. Whereas traditional games pitted the player against the computer, online games today allow players to interact with other players from around the world via the Internet. Players can now form virtual teams to compete or cooperate with each other.

There are basically 4 types of massively multiplayer online games. This article examines the differences between them.

1) Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG)

This is the classic and perhaps most popular type of online multiplayer game with popular games like Ultima Online, Everquest, and World of Warcraft. Players typically create a character that exists in a virtual world and can team up with other players to complete missions and even compete with each other. Along the way, players can upgrade their characters by acquiring in-game items and completing in-game objectives.

MMORPG players usually have to purchase and install the software on their personal computers and pay monthly fees to connect to the online servers.

2) Massively multiplayer online real-time strategy (MMORTS)

These are real-time strategy games that are played online with and against players from all over the world. Popular games in the genre include Shattered Galaxy and Defense of the Ancients.

3) Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter (MMOFPS)

Remember running in first person perspective and killing Nazis and demons in Wolfenstein 3D and Doom? In MMOFPS games, you can interact with hundreds of people around the world, forming teams and participating in team battles with each other. You can also develop your character in the long term as you earn experience points with completed objectives. Games like PlanetSide and World War II Online are popular in this category.

4) Browser-based Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (BBMMORPG)

It is the latest form of online role-playing and is played through the web browser, eliminating the need for frequent computer updates. Since there are no game clients installed, they can also be played anywhere with an internet connection.
