What to expect when you get your first tattoo

Whether you’ve been planning a tattoo design for months, or decided on impulse to go for it, when you’re about to get your first tattoo, it’s completely normal to be nervous! You may be anxious about the pain, whether you’ll be able to stick it out to the end, or whether you’ll really be able to commit to a design for life. Either way, tattoos are more popular than ever!

Here are my top 8 tips to make getting your first tattoo easier:

1. Think about where the tattoo will go and if your choice of clothing makes it easy to access. Will the tattoo artist be able to reach the area with ease, without leaving you feeling too bare? Also consider the type of material; you may sweat once the pain starts, and you may need to lie in an awkward position, so wear something soft and comfortable.

2. Inadvertently, tattoo shops can seem intimidating at first. These are usually busy places, and you may not be seen right away, but keep smiling; they will come to you eventually.

3. Before getting the tattoo, you will be asked to sign a consent form, which will ask about your medical history. If you’re blessed with a youthful appearance, remember to bring your ID too.

4. You’ll be eager to get started, but there’s often a long wait. To be prepared; bring a book, magazine, or fully charged phone. The tattoo artist may need to complete your design, take lunch or make changes.

5. Once the design is ready, you will have the stencil placed on your body as a transfer. Look in the mirror and be honest about whether you’re happy with the placement. It’s easy for the tattooist to clean it up and try it out in a few different places.

6. When the tattoo artist starts tattooing you, your body will be flooded with adrenaline. This can make you feel dizzy, so make sure your blood sugar levels are up by making sure you’ve eaten beforehand. Feel free to bring something to nibble on while you get tattooed too.

7. Tattoos hurt, but staying tense makes it worse. He will distract himself from the pain with music, a book or chatting. Some people stay quiet and just tune out; whatever works best for you! It’s just pain, and it can’t be that bad, or no one would get a second tattoo!

8. You may feel a bit dizzy afterwards, so don’t feel too fast! Your tattoo artist will give you advice on aftercare, which is to keep the tattoo clean and in good condition so that it heals well. Ask them to write it down, as you may forget it once you get home.
