Where should I place my tattoo?

When you have your entire body as your canvas, it’s hard to choose the perfect spot, and knowing that it’s a lifelong decision can seem daunting. There are things that everyone needs to keep in mind when making their individual choice, and when you’ve done that, you need to stop thinking and just do it!

Do you know what you want your tattoo to be an image of? Obviously, this is the first decision most people have to make, and there are thousands of designs to choose from. Some people like to design their own tattoo, and others have a symbol or image that has been meaningful to them throughout their lives. It is also not uncommon for words to be used in tattoo designs, and the names of partners or children are popular. If you already have a particular tattoo in mind, such as a bracelet for example, you won’t have to worry about an image, but rather find a pattern instead.

With your image chosen, it will be a matter of how big or small you want it to be. Some tattoos cover a large area, like the back, but most are smaller, like on the calf or shoulder. Women commonly choose smaller tattoos that are images, while men choose full scenes that run across their arms, legs, back, or chest. Keep in mind that when choosing your image and size, tattoos hurt while being done, and the bigger the tattoo, the more painful it will be. It is also more painful if your tattoo has many multiple colors or if you choose an area that is close to the bone.

You may want to consider the location of your tattoo at the same time you are calculating the size. If the idea is to tattoo your ankle, it is probably not convenient for you to choose a scene from The Lord of the Rings, for example. Do you want your tattoo hidden or in plain sight? Do you want to be able to cover it up sometimes but show it off at others? If you choose a controversial image, you may prefer to hide it, while the decorative bands are usually in plain sight.

Women often choose a feminine tattoo, placed on a curve or in a place on their body that they like to draw attention to. Small round Celtic symbols on the lower back, a butterfly inside the wrist or a string of roses around the nipple can be very sensual and attractive to the opposite sex. There will always be people who don’t like tattoos, but the best thing to do if you want one is to go out and get it. After all, it’s your body, and you only live in it once, so give it some thought, but don’t be afraid to be spontaneous either!
