Blu-ray technology

Yes, it’s the lightning, not the blue lightning. The letter ‘e’ was intentionally avoided to make it suitable for the trademark. And yes, Blu-ray is more advanced and better than DVD. Everyone was very excited when DVDs came out in 1997, making it possible to play digital audio/video even in our homes. Now, people are talking about the new technology, which is even better than DVDs that came out in 2006.

After VCRs and DVDs, technological advances brought us Blu-ray technology. The name blu-ray is derived from the fact that a blue (actually blue-violet) laser is used to read and write Blu-ray discs. Ray technology is not the achievement of a single company. A group of prominent companies such as Apple, Dell, Sony, Sun Microsystems, etc. they formed the Ray Disc Association, which developed this technology.

Blu-ray discs are superior to DVDs in the following factors:

(a) More storage capacity A standard single-sided 12cm DVD can store 4.7GB of data, while the same size single-layer ray disc can store 25GB of data, almost five times more than a DVD. A double layer lightning disk can store 50 GB of data. Just like DVDs, we can get mini size ray discs as well with 8cm size. This MD with single layer capacity can store 7.8 GB and double layer capacity can store 15.6 GB.

(b) Higher data transfer rate than 36 Mbps and,

(c) Audio and video play more clearly compared to DVD.

The following are the factors that are responsible for embedding more data in a ray disk:

(a) Unlike DVDs, which rely on red lasers operating at 650 nm to read and write data, Blu-ray discs rely on blue lasers operating at 405 nm. As the ray technology uses the short-wavelength laser compared to DVD, it can embed more data on the disc that is the same size as a DVD.

(b) The thickness of the cover layer was reduced.

(c) The numerical aperture was increased to 0.85.

Different ray disk formats:

(a) BD-R: Recordable format for HD video recording and PC data storage.

(b) BD-ROM – Read-only format for pre-recorded content like high-definition movies, games.

(c) BD-RW: rewritable format for PC data storage.

(d) BD-RE: Rewritable format for HD video recording and PC data storage.

Features unique to Blu-ray players are:

*You can create playlists.

*You can make changes to the recorded video and mix up your order.

*You can record high-definition television (HDTV) with improved picture and sound qualities.

*You can record one program while playing another.

*The player automatically finds the empty space to record new programs on the disc to avoid overlapping programs.

*You can go randomly to any point on the disk.
