How To Create A Western And Cowgirl Themed Bedroom – Boys Bedroom Design Tips

Creating a cowboy-themed room can be a lot of fun, and there are so many options. Many young children love the old west, and this theme can be created without difficulty.

I think the easiest way to start is by choosing your bedding. There are many western and cowboy comforter and quilt sets available, filled with scenes of horses, cowboys, and rodeo. Denim bedding sets also go well with the rugged look. You can pair denim bedding or any solid color bedding with Navajo or Native American patterned sheets, or sheets with a Western design print such as horses, cowboy hats, boots, etc. Cowboy comforter sets often have matching cushions available. If you go for a solid bedding look, there are plenty of cowboy-themed throw pillows, red or blue bandana fabric pillows, cow prints, denim, leather, and Native American art incorporated into the design.

Once the bedding has been chosen, the next step is to choose how to treat the walls. If you intend to paint them, earth tones generally work best, such as a warm tan or a color you really like that exists in the bedding. Adobe-look walls also work well. I recommend taking your bedding with you to the paint store, when choosing your paint. It makes it so much easier to color match. Wallpaper can also be used, with a western/cowboy print, but sometimes keeping it simple is much more effective. There are wallpaper patterns that have a leather stitching look. With solid wall colors, borders can be applied. Another option is to purchase a western scene wall mural or paint western elements directly on the wall, such as cowboys, boots, saddles, horseshoes, etc.

Creative ideas to create a western themed room:

1. Buy or paint a mural of a western scene. Frame it with rough boards to represent a “window” surrounding the view. Create a Western feel by using Western, Southwestern, Native American, or Navajo area rugs. Use western blankets and throws over a chair or bed. Use two western throws or blankets and make them into curtains.

2. Log beds and rustic furniture go well with a cowboy-themed room. Another option is standard wooden furniture. You can buy braided wire or cowboy boot drawer pulls, or skull knobs to embellish it. Look for rustic, sturdy, unpainted wood basics for bedroom furniture and apply a simple varnish or stain. Use a rustic country shelf as a wall accent. You can buy wooden shelves at craft stores. The shelf can be painted in a color that matches the room. Lightly sand the edges to create a rugged, worn look. Replace your light switch covers with western-style covers.

3. Find scenes of the west, cowboys, horses, in magazines and books. They can be cropped and framed. You can also buy amazing photos online through websites that sell stock photography. Many of these photos are available for just a few dollars and can be printed, framed, and hung on the walls, or grouped in small groups on dressers. Think wild horses, old worn saddles, teepees, horseshoes, Old West and rodeo scenes. Have your child help you!

4. Some Accessories to Consider: Antique Western Boxes, Cowboy Clocks, Cowboy Light Switch Covers, Rugged Rustic Clothing, Cowboy Mirrors, Rustic and Cowboy Lights, Rustic Rugs, a Lasso, Saddles, Spurs, Rustic Picture Frames or antiques, vintage guitars, sheriff’s badges, flashlights, cowboy boots, cowboy hats, faux animal fur. Take an old lamp and attach string to the base, keeping it away from the light source.

5. Use a pencil and loosely write your child’s name on the wall. Apply glue and stick a twisted rope on the letters.
