Interview with a Freelance Author: A Conversation with Darcy Daniel

Australian author, Darcy Daniel, has written an exciting thriller called the devil’s cradle. Full of intrigue and romantic suspense, this novel kept me on my toes. The talented author hadn’t always wanted to be a writer, but for as long as she could remember, she was certainly an avid reader. She began to get the idea that she would like to become an author during her senior year in high school.

He writes thrillers/suspense with a touch of romance and also writes contemporary romance. Darcy has always loved a good romance, but she became a huge fan of Dean Koontz during her teens, loving the way he told a riveting thriller while incorporating romance.

Darcy’s first novel, playing the role, a contemporary romance, was published by Carina Press. He had written the script and then decided that it would also work as a novel. She so she adapted it, and it soon won the Charter Oak Golden Acorn contest for best contemporary romance series. When an American writer friend suggested that she submit it to Carina Press, she was totally surprised and ecstatic when she accepted it.

His second novel, the devils cradle, is a suspenseful thriller with a touch of romance. This time he decided to try desktop publishing to have more control over his work. The book was professionally edited, as she knew how important it was. So far, it has received wonderful reviews.

Here’s the back cover blurb:

In the island state of Australia, there is more than one species of Tasmanian devil…

Beneath the surface of Nina Holt’s perfect marriage lurks a life of terror inflicted on her by her politically powerful husband, Michael, and her brother, Greg, a sadistic detective. For over a decade they have managed to keep Nina prisoner, using her to satisfy her every whim.

Worse, the only light in his life, his 9-year-old son, Sam, considers Michael a hero. When Sam mimics Michael’s violence by lashing out at her, Nina knows it’s time for both of them to escape before Sam truly becomes the monster Michael is preparing him to become.

After crashing his car in his rush to escape, kind motorist Case Herder offers to help him. Unaware that he has her own plans for her, Nina agrees, initiating a deadly game of cat and mouse as they flee through Tasmania with Sam.

As Michael and Greg relentlessly pursue them up Cradle Mountain, Nina finds herself with nowhere to run. Cornered, she has no choice but to face evil head on.

Darcy is currently working on her first ghost horror script, while also trying to write her next novel, a romantic thriller. When he’s not writing, Darcy works at his day job and enjoys getting together with friends and family.

When asked what he likes best about writing, Darcy explains that he “likes to invent realistic characters. Characters always come before plot to me.” If she could become a fictional character, it would be Lucy from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Her favorite author is Sandra Brown because she writes great suspense stories with a heavy dose of romance.

Finally, I asked Darcy what she would like her readers to know about her and/or her writing. She responded, “If you’re a fan of Sandra Brown and Dean Koontz, I’m sure you’ll enjoy my stories too. Although I’m Australian, I was raised on a diet of American books.” So even though the locations are different, my style is pretty Americanized.
