Potty Training Puppy – 4 important tips for effective training!

If you’ve just bought or adopted your puppy, one of the most basic puppy training tips you need to know is how to potty train him. Forget training your new pup to obey commands like “sit” and “fetch” at this point. Why? Because if you don’t want to come home every day to clean up your pup’s mess, then you better make sure you apply the puppy training tips you’ve learned from day one!

Before your pup is properly potty-trained, be sure to keep him off your carpet and other wooden furniture. Only when you can dispose of your waste in the designated area does it allow you more freedom to roam around your home. If you’re wondering how long it will take for your pup to effectively potty train, it depends on the breed of your pup. Personally I have heard of puppies taking up to 3 months to be well trained but my own pups took less than 1 month so it all depends. Using the following puppy potty training tips will also help you train your puppy more effectively and quickly. They are the exact tips I used when training my pups.

1. Right place

When you first bring your new pup home, he won’t know where he’s supposed to dispose of his waste. It’s important that you decide on a puppy toilet early on for the simple reason that you won’t be able to re-train your puppy to use a different toilet after a while. However, the bathroom must be somewhere in the open air. If that can’t be done, train your pup to use the same toilet you use. However, if you decide to potty train your pup with newspaper, then you run the risk of eliminating his waste on any newspaper you accidentally left lying around your house.

2. Constant training

By constant training, I mean not changing the ‘potty’ and also checking on your pup every time he needs to go potty. At first, you should check on your puppy every time he disposes of his waste. If he makes a mistake, don’t get mad at him or hit him. You can give him a light tap on the bottom and lead him to the correct potty right away. Only then will he realize that he has made a mistake and learn the correct place to go to the bathroom.

Therefore, for the fastest effect on potty training your puppy, he should be home at all times for the first few months. A puppy is like a very small child; he can’t correct his mistake if he only finds out a few hours later. Only by correcting it right away can you see better results.

3. The best time to train

The best time to potty train your puppy is right after meals. So if you are at home, you can take your potty outside or into the bathroom after your meals in the morning and at night. Leaving a bowl of water throughout the day is vital, but you should remove the food dish after your pup has had his fill at mealtimes. You want to make sure that you feed your puppy at the same time every day so that he has a proper routine. You will also learn to anticipate the time to go to the bathroom like after meals.

4. Positive reinforcement

I have to say that this is the most important puppy training tip of all because your puppy will grow up to be a happy and healthy dog only if he has a lot of positive reinforcement. Shower your pup with lots of love and be very patient with him. Be prepared for accidents, but don’t get angry or spank him. Instead, reward him with lots of praise when he manages to potty in the right place. Don’t expect to get results overnight or even within the first few months.

If you apply the puppy training tips above, you may be able to get the desired results over time, but you must be very patient and loving. Once your pup is well-trained, he’ll have a very clean pet that he’ll enjoy company for a lifetime, so it’s well worth the time and patience you spend now. Have fun!
