Product Review – The Freedom Leg Offloading Brace

The Freedom Leg Off-Loading Orthosis goes beyond the limitations of crutches, wheelchairs, or knee walkers.

How many people are injured and require the affected limb to be non-weight bearing, but cannot tolerate crutches or cannot afford to use a wheelchair? What alternative is there to maintaining freedom of movement, adequate healing time, and going about your daily activities without assistance?

The Freedom Leg is a unique device created by Forward Mobility of Edmonds, WA. The principle of the device is to ensure zero weight on the affected leg from the knee down. It achieved this by using an advanced carbon fiber composite frame around the leg, transferring weight from the thigh to the ground, thus removing all weight from the knee to the foot.

When adjusted, the patient’s foot will float off the ground without any weight being exerted from the knee down. Its unique shape ensures a nearly normal gait, with reduced leg atrophy typically seen with prolonged immobilization with crutches, casts, or wheelchairs.

Freedom Leg is ideal for diabetic patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy and diabetic foot ulcerations that require complete non-weight bearing. The device can also be used with patients who have had their lower leg and foot amputated.

When the patient initially inserts the device, the use of a cane is recommended. Once the patient gains confidence with the device, he can go up and down steps, steep inclines, and uneven surfaces.

Imagine lifting grocery bags, going shopping without help. That’s the freedom you get with the Freedom Leg.

It is recommended that you consult with your physician or therapist to determine if you are able to ambulate with the tis device. Freedom Leg is not indicated for patients with balance problems.
