Coton De Tulear – Have you heard of this breed of dog?

I may be a bit biased, but I don’t understand why the Coton de Tulear dog breed isn’t more popular. If I were to make a list of all the qualities that make up the perfect dog, the Coton de Tulear would be at the top of the list.

Yes, of course I have a Coton Dog. I found Luke by chance and it was love at first sight. He was a beautiful snow white furry bundle full of love and energy, so what if he couldn’t pronounce or spell the breed? (pronounced Co tawn day also reads are).

However, there are a few things to consider before adopting one of these beautiful dogs. One is that an investment of time and money is required for grooming. Cotons are long-haired and require frequent brushing or they can mat.

I keep Luc in a puppy cut so his coat is very easy to care for. It costs me about $55 a month at the barber with brushing once or twice a week between visits. The good thing is that, even with their long hair, they don’t lose much. That’s a big plus, especially if you suffer from allergies.

The second thing to consider is that they can be quite expensive and usually cannot be found at your local shelter. The average price of a Coton de Tulear is between $1,200 and $3,500. You can check out the Coton Rescue Organization (cotonrescue.us) to see if there are any Cotons in need of a home.

The third thing to keep in mind is that when you tell someone you have a Coton de Tulear, they just give you a blank look because they have never heard of the breed.

I’m surprised these dogs aren’t more popular in the US because:

The Coton de Tulear has a cotton-soft coat that sheds very little (great for allergy sufferers).

· They are energetic, but will adapt to any lifestyle, whether you are a sedentary person or an avid runner.

· They are kind and gentle. They love children and other animals.

They are known to be a healthy breed so there are not too many trips to the vet.

· Cotons are extremely intelligent, so they are easy to train and teach them good manners.

They are great for smaller homes or apartments, weighing an average of 8 to 15 pounds.

This easy-going breed makes an excellent companion dog for everyone, young and old.

They are very cute and give great hugs.

Coton Dogs are extremely loyal to their owners and make excellent watchdogs (don’t worry, they’re not barking).

So if you’re looking for a wonderful little white fluffy dog that will be a loyal and loving addition to your family, consider a Coton de Tulear. It may be difficult to spell and pronounce, but it is actually a very small price to pay. Just make sure you go to a reputable breeder and stay away from puppy mills.
