Home decor idea – how to make small rooms look bigger!

You are decorating a small room and you want to make it look bigger! Here are some home decor ideas to help you with this decorating challenge.

First of all, get rid of the clutter! It makes the problems of a small space even more problematic. By removing leftover furniture and rarely used belongings, you can start your room makeover from scratch. According to Arts and Crafts designer William Morris, “Have nothing in your home that you don’t know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”

By keeping furniture to a minimum, you will create additional floor space and give the room a clean and uncluttered look. Diminish the “solid forms” by choosing furniture with legs that help create a sense of space – a home decor idea to use again and again!

Another home decor idea to add to your list is to declutter the area at eye level that you see when entering a room. Avoid placing wall cabinets or shelves on the wall facing the entryway. This would also include using a group of small images on the wall at the entrance instead of scattering them across the walls.

The use of mirrors is a wonderful home decoration idea. Due to their reflective surface, mirrors “bounce” light around a room, creating openness. Other reflective surfaces that create the illusion of space are glossy painted finishes on a wall or marble floors in a bathroom or kitchen.

Painting the walls in pale shades of “faded” colors like green, lilac or blue instead of bolder colors like red or orange will give the feeling of spaciousness. A home decor idea to use in rooms of any size is an accent wall in a contrasting color that will give the room a focal point.

A long, low bench or coffee table can be used along one wall to help lengthen the room. Choose shelves that are more horizontal than vertical to give a feeling of spaciousness.

Keep patterns to a minimum. Avoid wallpaper or upholstery material with large patterns. Keep designs small and work with just one or two in the room; you don’t want “pattern overloading”.

These home decorating ideas will help you get started on your small room decorating project. Be creative and have fun turning that “small space” into a nice and stylish area.
