Travel to Corbett National Park, Land of the Tiger

Corbett National Park is one of the most loved and well-known wildlife reserves in India. It is home to one of the largest concentrations of endangered Royal Bengal tigers. Named after the famous British hunter turned conservationist, Colonel Jim Corbett, the park is spread over a vast area of 500 square kilometres, located in the foothills of the Kumaon Himalayas in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. In addition to the tiger, it is inhabited by other wildlife such as elephants, sambhars deer, cheetahs, crocodiles and more than 400 species of birds, both migratory and resident.

A part of the park opens in October, while the central area of Dhikala opens from mid-November to June. Aside from the safaris in the park that take place in government-approved jeeps and small buses (known as canters), it is advisable to make reservations well in advance as there is a constant rush of tourists during the season. The weather starts to cool down from October and gets quite cold during December and January and gets quite hot as one progresses into Indian summers from April onwards until the park closes in June. Both seasons provide ample opportunities for wildlife viewing, as during winters animals often come out to bask in the sun, while in summers there is a distinctive pattern of heading to watering holes to quench thirst and cool off in the water. A lot of wildlife enthusiasts and photographers prefer the summer months as the foliage is much less dense and the viewing opportunities are better. Winters presents its own charms of dense forests, wildlife, hordes of migratory birds, and the enchanting views of the mist-laden Ramganga River flowing through the central area of the park. The park is only a 6-7 hour drive from New Delhi and is also connected by a railway. Definitely a must see for everyone including individuals, groups and wildlife enthusiasts!
